In order to meet future needs and to avoid such problems as traffic jams, additional traffic generated by the search for parking spaces, as well as noise and air pollution, many large cities today promote the use of underground and rapid transit systems. On account of the generally limited space available, such systems frequently require sophisticated engineering structures (tunnels, bridges, etc.). Not least due to the complex permit application procedures and the many different disciplines, the demands on interdisciplinary project management are very high.
